You can get some information about SEDA by reading this interview. SEDA with Professor Samuel Alexander Denny Q1. What is SEDA? A. It is the only English debate club in Sangmyung University. SEDA was formed with guidance from Professor Samuel Alexander Denny in 2008. Every student can join us without distinction of major and improve their debate skill and English skill. We have been conducting discussions with special experiences. For example, we had an opportunity to debate in the British Embassy in Korea. And also, we participated in the debate contest as a campus representative team. Q2. What topics did SEDA discuss in this year? A. We have been debating about the death penalty system, reality of Korean education, and the unification of North and South Korea until now. Q3. How is the discussion going in SEDA? A. The debate is going on using the Asian parliamentary debate style. The members are divided into a government team and opposition team, and they have an argument for and against a given subject. After the debate, English native professors give us some feedback to improve our debate skills. Q4. Did you experience a conflict situation during a debate? A. There has never been any conflict because we have a discussion in a quite generous atmosphere. Sometimes, male members are concerned about female members’ moods when we deal with sensitive issues such as the wage gap between the sexes. Q5. Is there anything you would like to say for Sangmyung University students? A. I have become the team leader of SEDA because I get to know the importance of debate sharing opinions with each other. I was able to expand my ideas by inspecting the pros and cons of various subjects. And also, I learned the method to accept the opinions of others. Kicker: SM NEWS Sangmyung University Obtained Revised ISMS from KISA About ISMS and the Importance of Information Security by Hye-im Li, Reporter kateli1004@naver.com ▲The Sangmyung University Sangmyung University has obtained a certification screening by the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) for the operation of the academic administration system and the main homepage. As a result, Sangmyung University got the newly revised Information Security Management System (ISMS*) by meeting all areas of the certification standard. The certification standard includes the scholastic record, the grade administration, the Education Management system, issue of the certificate, and operation of the main homepage. Sangmyung University said that, “We have been working hard to establish a safe security system and the effort was confinned by obtaining revised ISMS.” ▲The Certification ISMS/ISMS-P The Korea Internet & Security Agency is a government department which manages internetㆍinformation protection. One of the main businesses is the development of the information protection industry. To promote the information protection industry, the Korea Internet & Security Agency operates a certificate system. ISMS is one of the certificates which Sangmyung University obtained. The mandatory target of certification includes colleges with more than 10,000 students. There are 42 universities that correspond to the mandatory target. However, only 14 colleges obtained the certificate including Sangmyung University. The Korea Internet & Security Agency has planned to make ISMS mandatory since September. Unacquired universities will be imposed a fine of 30 million won. The recent implementation of the certificate for mandatory colleges means the importance of information protection in universities. Universities handle private information like the scholastic record, the grade of students and personal information. Therefore, we have to think about the possibility of personal information leakage. To avoid the personal information leakage, it is important to establish a thorough Information Security Management System. Not only the effort of our university but also the effort of students is important. Since this personal information belongs to students. Thus, SMU students have to pay attention to personal information protection, too, when using a public computer. It would be a good method of prevention to log out after using a public computer. *ISMS: ISMS and PIMS have been integrated and implemented since November 7th, 2018. Kicker: SM News Sangmyung University Signing a Business Agreement for the Senior Resource Circulation Project By Su-jeong Sim, Reporter tlatnwjd97@naver.com Sangmyung University's Department of Clothing announced on July 29th that it has signed a business agreement on the Senior Resource Circulation Project. In the Eunpyeong Ward Chief’s office, a three-way agreement was made between Sangmyung University, Eunpyeong District Office and Eunpyeong Senior Club. Attending the signing of the business agreement ceremony were Sangmyung University's head of the Department of Clothing Lee Min-seon, professor Yang Hui-sun and Kim Mi-gyeong head of the Eunpyeong District Office and Jo Beom-gi, director of the Eunpyeong Senior Club. The Senior Resource Circulation Project is a project to produce upcycling products such as eco-bags by utilizing recycled materials such as old clothes and fabrics. This project is establishing a mutual exchange and cooperation system by Sangmyung University and Eunpyeong District Office and Eunpyeong Senior Club, and it aims to contribute to spreading awareness of resource recycling and creating jobs for senior community members. Through the agreement, Sangmyung University's Clothing Department will be in charge of product design, job training and consulting support for the project. Kicker: SM NEWS Sangmyung University, Holding “University Union Teacher Simulation Evaluation” by Ju - eun Yeon, Reporter yeonje1113@naver.com Sangmyung University held a simulation evaluation training of its “University Union Teacher” in July 30, 2019 at the Grand Auditorium of Seoul National University's Global Engineering Education Center in Gwanak - gu, Seoul. The simulation evaluation training was held under the theme of “the transcript of school records synthesize screening*” and was organized by Sangmyung University, in alliance with Catholic University of Korea, Sungshin Women's University, Sejong University and Incheon National University.The theme of this training was “the transcript of school records synthesize screening.” This aims to foster the competence and know-how of teachers in charge of career and entering school advancement at real high schools and share information on university entrance exams.Starting with a guide on major points of admission for the 2020 school year, it included the factors and methods of “the transcript of school records synthesize screening” for each university, a simulation evaluation for “the transcript of school records synthesize screening,” and feedback on the results of simulation evaluation by each university and a comprehensive discussion.Moreover, this training session has helped teachers understand “the transcript of school records synthesize screening” by allowing them to experience the simulation evaluation system for students, which is being used in actual university entrance exams. A second training session will be held in January next year for teachers who failed to participate in the simulation evaluation training, in which more than 300 high school teachers participated. Sangmyung University has been conducting annual training sessions to better understand “the transcript of school records synthesize screening” and to strengthen teachers' ability regarding career education and entering school. An edited version of our interview follows. Ryu Hye-min Q1. What is the purpose of establishing Freemed? Currently, lots of medical bussinesses only focus on treatment of disease. However, prevention, diagnosis, and rehabilitation are also important in medicine. Therefore, we founded the Freemed to provide medical help for the socially weak by developing various medical activities. Q2. What do you do exactly in Freemed? I am managing 150 members of 7 headquarters, and operating 3 businesses. I usually deal with the legal matters or connect with governmental agencies. Q3. Could you tell us what is your impressive memory? I stayed for 3 days in one area to teach health education to children. One of the elementary school students was afraid of strangers heavily and had a lack of social skills. However, I became close with the kid after 3 days of teaching and talking. The kid came and hugged me first in the last class. I was really pleased to share my mind with the children and find out the essence of education. Q4. What are the projects under way? Do you have any plans for the future? Firstly, the health clinic for the underprivileged has been operating for 10 years in Seoul Station. Secondly, health educational curriculums have been arranged for rural children. We have scheduled to launch health educational programs for children, teenagers, and the elderly in the highlands and islands. Finaly, medical campaigns and educational programs are being conducted in Kenya and the Philippines as a part of the overseas health care projects. We will also go to Cambodia as soon as possible. Q5. Is there anything that you would like to say for Sangmyung University students? There are only two Sangmyung University students including me. In addition, few of the 200~300 applicants are Sangmyung University students. We do not care about the major of the applicant but his or her passion. I wish for many SMU students to show their abilities in Freemed. Q6. Please tell us how to apply for Freemed. We are going to start recruting between December to next January. Kicker: SM NEWS SMU, Selected for International Youth Leaders Exchange Support Project by Eugene Ha, Cub-Reporter eugine16@naver.com The International Youth Leaders Exchange Support Project has been a project of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the Korea Youth Activity Agency since 2017. It supports exchanges between domestic university students and foreign students staying in Korea. It aims to enhance mutual understanding between countries and strengthen international capabilities of university students. This year 15 universities nationwide has been selected to run the ‘2019 International Youth Leaders Exchange Support Project’ including Sangmyung University. The International Youth Leaders Exchange Support Project is an exchange program conducted by local universities aimed at promoting friendship and cooperation between domestic students and foreign students. It provides an educational environment to be a global talent person who our country is looking for, and university students from various countries can meet to learn from each other and develop their international capabilities. Starting in May, about 1,400 recruited participants including domestic students and foreign students staying in the country from each of the 15 selected universities will participate in various programs. This year's project will be carried out with a specialization program by each university, dealing with the characteristics of operating institutions or regions in question, and global issues. In the case of HUFS (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies), the program will be held under the theme of 'Korea in the World: Exploring UNESCO World Heritage in Korea'. It is to improve understandings of each other's culture through research and sharing of Korea's cultural heritage, and playing games like the Golden Bell of Cultural Heritage and by discussing ways to carry on the culture. Sangmyung University has been selected as one of the operating institutions for the third consecutive year, following the 2017 Korea-China Youth Exchange Support Project and the 2018 International Youth Leader Exchange Support Project. Last year, the students who participated in the program 2018 Korea-China-Vietnam history relationship showed great satisfaction and won the Minister's Award of the Report on International Youth Leaders Exchange Support Project. △Sangmyung University won the Minister’s Award International youth leadership exchange programs, in which students from various countries meet and bond with each other, should continue and create opportunities for them to share their own culture and exchange with each other. Therefore, you can see many students who conduct team project at Sangmyung University. However, there are students who wait for a place or go to a café. Anyone who has ever done a team project in our university will sympathize. I want to cheerfully tell the students at my school not to worry anymore. Because now our school has a special space for team projects called the CLP(Collaborative Learning Park). CLP is a space designed for collaborative learning. It has various kinds of spaces with seminar- rooms, separated spaces and open spaces. In particular, each space has a TV for a display and a wireless cooperation solution (Bring Your Own Device) system. CLP is so popular among students to the extent that the rooms are fully booked during the usual study period. ▲The Photo of CLP So, who designed the CLP for students? CLP designers are school officials and Lee Hyun-woo, a professor of education. Professor Lee Hyun-woo actually said, “I thought it was a problem not to provide space for the team project, although we give a lot of tasks for the team project assignments.” It is of great significance that they have tried to think about and solve the lack of learning space. This may prove that the school and professors are interested in Sangmyung University students. CLP is a space for students only, so I hope all the students in our school will study and grow together. Commodity plastics are plastics that are used in high volume and a wide range of applications, such as film for packaging, photographic and magnetic tape, clothing, beverage and trash containers and a variety of household products where mechanical properties and service environments are not critical. Examples of commodity plastics are polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, poly(methyl methacrylate) and more. Kang Sang-wook, professor of Sangmyung University Recently, a research team led by Kang Sang-wook, professor of Sangmyung University, and a graduate student, Kim Min-soo, announced that they had secured technology to obtain ethylene and propylene at low cost, which are materials for commodity plastic. Olefin materials, such as ethylene and propylene in crude oil, are separated and produced through processes of a distillation column in petrochemical complexes. Generally, they are separated using different boiling points. The process of boiling and cooling at temperatures below minus 30 degrees must be repeated more than 100 times to obtain ethylene and propylene of a high degree of purity. Efforts have been made all over the world to replace the previous separation technique because its cost amounts to about 200 billion won a year in Korea.The membrane, which utilizes silver (Ag) ions, can get high purity olefin material with just one pass, but problems have been found in terms of durability.As a way to replace this, a membrane using silver (Ag) nanoparticles has been developed and this has received much attention due to its excellent durability.However, there were many difficulties in commercialization due to low transmission performance.To improve this, Professor Kang Sang-wook and his team recently succeeded in developing an olefin membrane that shows high permeability and mechanical properties at the same time utilizing durable silver (Ag) nanoparticles. The newly developed partitioning membrane is expected to replace the existing high-cost distillation column separation process if further cost-cutting studies are carried out. Kicker: SM News A Brand New Way to Get Along Volunteering at a Soup Kitchen by Dong-wook Kim, Cub-Reporter smartpodo@kakao.com Recently, there has been a lot of Individualism going on in our society. People are not talking to each other like before and are not communicating with acquaintances. This kind of meta is toxic in our society, not being beneficial for the developmental perspective. Individualism is also spreading in universities. According to the statistics of “Albamon”, approximately 38.5% of the freshmen are living as a “Voluntary Individualist.” Will there be some solutions to this single favored situation? On April 1st, students of the Department of Food and Nutrition of Sangmyung Univ. did volunteering at a soup kitchen to enhance the friendship between the elders and the freshmen. According to one of the freshmen’s interview after the volunteering, he said, “Breaking the ice was such a hard time for me when I first entered our school. Then my major started collecting people for this food canteen volunteering. After visiting the elderly welfare center to deliver food to the elderly, I got to know more elders and companions in my major. The volunteering was tough, but the suffering was worth it.” Students Serving Food By this interview, it seems that volunteering is effecting much wider boundaries than just working. Being interactive with people doing the duty can make both feel connected. Thus, this can ease the Individualism going on these days. The volunteering can be anything else other than serving out food from the kitchen. The volunteering subject can be the person’s major like teaching a language or coaching how to be in shape. These activities might just begin as an exercise for building a resume but in the long term, people who chose to be alone will join in.
